Chillum Smoking Pipes

Chillums look like a small and hollow tube, and they are designed for small bowls, portability, and personal smoking. The chillum consists of a small bowl at one end, and at the other end, you’ll find the mouthpiece. How do I use a chillum?

When you’re putting your herbs in the bowl, make sure not to clog it. Then, light the bowl of your chillum, and inhale! Chillums are mostly not equipped with a screen, which means there is nothing to block chunks of herbs from clogging the bowl. Sometimes it’s a good idea to put a medium-sized piece of the herbs at the bottom of the chamber of your bowl, to act as a sort of disposable screen. This will keep the looser, smaller material from making its way to the chamber.

Because the chillums are so small, the smoke won’t be cooled as effectively when using a spoon pipe or a water pipe. Therefore, you have to be careful when you light up your chillum and inhale the smoke. It’s best to use a small flame to light the bowl and make sure you inhale the smoke steady and slowly.

What is the difference between chillums and one hitters?

Most of the time, the terms chillum and one hitter are used interchangeably. There’s no big difference between the two smoking devices. In fact, anything geared towards small bowls for personal smoking can be referred to as a ‘’one hitter’’. The difference comes in the materials. Where the one hitter pipes are mostly made out of metal, the chillums are often made of glass or ceramic.

How do I clean my Chillum?

When you are using your chillum frequently, it’s important to keep it clean. After using your chillum you can start by taking a cotton swab to clean the inside of the chillum. With this step you will take the tar and resin away. After a while, your chillum will get dirtier and needs a more thorough cleaning. For this, you can purchase a pipe cleaner to get the dirt out of your chillum. If your chillum is still dirty, it’s time for some extra measures. A good way to clean your chillum thoroughly is with boiling water. Hold your chillum with a pair of tongs and pour some boiling water into your chillum. If this doesn't wash away all the dirt inside, it’s time to let your chillum soak in a bath of isopropyl alcohol. After you’ve done this, it’s really important to rinse off your chillum and let it dry completely before using it, so you won’t have an alcohol taste on your chillum the next time you use it.
