5 Essential Skills Every Budtender Should Have
So you think you have what it takes to be a budtender? There’s more to it than just selling people weed and of course there’s more to it than enjoying in partaking. There’s more to it than even knowing a lot about the subject, although knowledge of all things cannabis is pretty much a job requirement. Do you have what it takes to be a good budtender or is your place on the other side of the counter as a patron (not that there’s anything wrong with that!)
Extensive Knowledge of Cannabis Strains
Of course you will need extensive knowledge of the thousands of cannabis strains that are sold in any of the dispensaries that you might end up working in. When we say “extensive knowledge” we of course mean that you need to know more than whether or not the strain is good or not, or how high it’s going to get you. You need to be aware of the various physiological and psychoactive effects of each strain, because believe me, you are going to get a lot of varying questions from prospective customers.
Not only should a good budtender have a wide breadth of knowledge regarding cannabis strains, they should have knowledge of which medications cause negative interactions with cannabis, and yes there are some. For instance, certain anti rejection meds for liver transplants cause negative interactions when used with cannabis. These are things that you need to know to ensure your customers’ safety and happiness.
People Skills
In addition to having a great deal of knowledge on cannabis, any good budtender will have the one quality that is vital for any retail job: people skills. Trust me when I say that you would not be a good budtender if you can’t stand dealing with the public, because once again, you will have to deal with them constantly and they will be asking you all the questions. If you can’t stand being asked what you might consider obvious questions by people completely new to cannabis, then this is not going to be the job for you. If on the other hand, you love helping people and teaching them new things, you would make an excellent budtender.
An Ability to Multitask
Most dispensaries are pretty busy places, and you’ll have of people running around, talking over each other, etc. As a budtender you’ll need to be able to multitask and do it well. Luckily, thanks to the internet, this generation is better at multitasking than any of the previous ones.
Salesmanship
Cannabis does a very good job at selling itself most of the time, but every good budtender should possess some degree of salesmanship. Like any retail establishment, the dispensary you budtend in will no doubt have certain deals and specials and you’ll need to be able to sell them to the crowd. Fortunately for you, the best salesmen are the ones who know their product. Tell them how much you enjoyed that Lemon Kush last Saturday.
Work Ethic
All good budtenders have an excellent work ethic. Budtending is a demanding job and you need to be on top of things. A dispensary is just as professional a working environment as any other job. In fact, all of the strict rules and regulations that they have to follow require nothing but the utmost professionalism. Being a little laid back is allowed though, you are selling people weed after all.
